Our Story

Formed in 1999, Devizes Town Band carries on a strong tradition of local musicianship. Starting with just a few local players, we now have members from the wider surrounding area, stretching from Trowbridge in the west to Pewsey in the east and Gloucester in the north.

Highlights include:

  • 1999:The Alpha Wind Ensemble was formed on April 25th
  • 2000: Mike Ward of Bratton Silver Band joined as Musical Director. The band gained its own rehearsal room at the Wyvern Club and a regular practice night
  • 2001: We became the Devizes Town Band and gained permission from the Town Council to feature the town crest in our logo. Mike Ward moved away from the area and Peter Francis took over as Musical Director
  • 2003: The first woodwind player joined the band
  • 2005: We welcomed John Blaker as Musical Director. He already had many years experience in Portishead Town Band, where he had acted as Bandmaster and he was also involved there with the associated training bands
  • 2005: In November, we staged our first charity concert, with support from Kennet Vale Band
  • 2007: We collaborated with the Mayor of Devizes to launch our now annual April St. George’s Day Concert. In November, we gave our first Poppy Appeal Concert in aid of the Royal British Legion
  • 2008: We staged our second annual St. George’s Day Concert and gave our first performance outside of Wiltshire, at the Royal Victoria Park in Bath
  • 2012: Sharon Lindo became Musical Director, taking over from John Blaker, contributing her wealth of professional experience as an orchestral and theatre musician
  • 2013: The band opened the proceedings at the inaugural Proms in the Park in Hillworth Park, Devizes, which was broadcast live on Fantasy Radio. This promises to be a regular and increasingly popular event in the calendar
  • 2014: We were delighted and honoured to perform at our first wedding; of our flautist, Carol, to Sam. A wonderful day!
  • 2014: We held our first open rehearsal, inviting young players to join us for the experience. Subsequently, we welcomed our 40th member to the list of current musicians
  • 2015: Our Hollywood inspired “Movies in Concert” in April. Proms in the Park and Childrens’ Proms in September. Raising money for Julia’s House in December.
